Artist Statement

최근 빠른 기술 발전으로 인해 ‘생성형 A.I’가 만들어 공유되어지는 수 많은 멋진 이미지를 보면서 인공지능의 기술이 확실히 좋아지고 있다는 생각이 들었다. 우리가 바다를 보면서 생각에 잠기고 꽃을 보면서 아름다운 색상을 상상을 하는 행위들이 점점 인공지능도 가능하리라는 생각에 접어들면서 많은 고민을 하게 만든다. 과연 나에게 감정이란 무엇이고, 나는 나답게 만드는 것은 무엇이며 그리고 이 모든 감정에 따른 창작의 행위는 무엇이며 인공지능에게 창작의 과정을 가르치는 것이 우리에게 어떤 의미로 다가 올 지에 대한 고민일 것이다. 필립 K. 딕의 ‘일렉트릭 드림즈’ 라는 공상과학 단편소설에서 ‘인간의 감정은 인간의 가치를 형성하는데 중요한 역할을 한다’ 라고 말하는 인공지능에게 다양한 인간의 감정에 대해 물어보며 그 의미에 대하여 같이 고민을 해본다. 그리고 인공지능이 인간의 감정을 흉내 낼 수 있는 그 시점을 꿈꾸어 본다.

The rapid pace of recent technological advancements and the countless stunning images created and shared by "generative AI" leave no doubt that artificial intelligence is truly evolving. Watching this happen makes me contemplate deeply, as I realize that the very acts of losing oneself in thought while looking at the ocean, or imagining beautiful colors while looking at a flower, may soon become possible for AI as well. This leads to profound questions: What is emotion to me? What makes me truly myself? What is the act of creation driven by all these emotions? And what will it mean for us to teach AI the process of creation?

In Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi short story collection Electric Dreams, an artificial intelligence states that "human emotion plays a crucial role in shaping human value." Reflecting on this, I want to ask AI about various human emotions and ponder their meaning together. I find myself dreaming of the moment when AI can truly replicate human emotion.

각 화면에 나오는 영상 이미지는 하석준 작가의 2008년 이후 다수의 작품을 기반으로 제작이 되었다. 다양한 AI를 이용하여 작가는 여러 번의 질문(?) 또는 의도적 제한을 통해서 작품의 새로운 발현을 찾아 보았다.. 이것을 혹자는 AI와의 협업이라고 하고 혹자는 AI를 이용한 재 작업이라고 한다. 의도하던 의도하지 않던 이것은 새로운 도전이자 위기일 수 있다.

The video images displayed on each screen are based on numerous works by artist Ha Seok-jun created since 2008. Using various AI technologies, the artist explored new artistic manifestations through repeated questioning (?) or intentional limitations. Some describe this process as a collaboration with AI, while others view it as a rework utilizing AI. Whether intended or not, this presents both a new challenge and a potential crisis.
